Claiming the space: Shaping the future of primary health care

With the Australian health system facing potentially its biggest overhaul in a generation, the AGPN National Forum 2009 shapes as the most important in the history of the Network. The Forum program has been built around the major issues under consideration in the Federal Government's proposed primary health care reforms. It is ideally timed to enable those attending to take part in an examination of the implications and opportunities for the Network, and for primary health care more broadly, arising from the health reform agenda.

The Forum theme - Claiming the Space - picks up on that reform agenda and promotes debate about positioning the Network as the key infrastructure to support a stronger, more integrated, responsive and accessible primary health care led system. It responds to the challenge thrown to the Network at last year's Forum by the Federal Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon Nicola Roxon, who stated:

"The Government's reform agenda for primary health care therefore offers both challenges and opportunities for the Divisions network. It will inevitably put the spotight on Divisions of General Practice, their current activities and achievements, and their potential roles in the primary health care system of the future."

The National Forum is the peak annual event for information exchange, shared learning and development, and networking for AGPN and its members. It aims to encourage the promotion and adoption of best practice in primary health care organisation, planning and delivery by making available top quality presenters across a range of topics relating to primary health care.

The 2009 Forum will be held from Wednesday 4 November to Saturday 7 November at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.
